Aviation Museum of South Africa
The South African Airways Museum Society (SAA Museum) in Germiston is one of Africa's most remarkable aviation museums , a volunteer-run working museum that preserves the history of South African aviation from its earliest days to the jet age. The museum's most striking exhibits are its two Boeing 747s displayed on the apron, including Lebombo (ZS-SAR) , the very aircraft that performed the ceremonial fly-past over Ellis Park during the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final.
Visitors can walk through the aircraft and experience the flight deck of a commercial airliner up close. The museum also houses a growing collection of piston-engine aircraft, vintage jet trainers, aviation memorabilia, uniforms, and an extensive archive of South African airline history.
Several aircraft are maintained in airworthy condition and fly at air shows. Volunteers , many of them retired pilots, engineers, and cabin crew , are on hand to share personal stories and technical insights. The SAA Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 15:30 (last entry 14:30).
Guided tours can be arranged for schools and groups with advance notice. Aircraft restoration workshops are visible during visiting hours.
