Church Square Pretoria
Church Square is the historic heart of Pretoria (Tshwane) and one of the most significant public spaces in South Africa. Established in 1857, the square served as the focal point of the original Boer settlement that grew into the country's administrative capital. Today it is a vibrant urban plaza surrounded by magnificent Edwardian and Neo-classical buildings.
At the centre of the square stands a commanding statue of President Paul Kruger , "Oom Paul" , the president of the former South African Republic, flanked by four Boer War sentinels. The statue was unveiled in 1954 and remains one of the most photographed monuments in Pretoria. The square has witnessed some of the defining moments of South African history, from state proclamations to political protests.
The buildings encircling Church Square include the Palace of Justice (where the Rivonia Trial , which sent Nelson Mandela to Robben Island , was held), the Old Raadsaal (former parliament of the ZAR), the General Post Office, the Nedbank Building, and the Reserve Bank. Together they form an extraordinarily well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian streetscape.
Church Square is easily accessible from Pretoria Station and serves as a hub for the Rea Vaya BRT network. The surrounding streets host pavement cafés, craft vendors, and street performers. The square is most vibrant on weekday mornings and is free to visit at all times.
