JohannesburgBox office Mon to Fri; performance times vary by production
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, the Market Theatre is one of Africa's most storied stages. Founded in 1976 in a converted fruit market, it became known as the Theatre of the Struggle, staging defiant anti-apartheid works. Today it presents a busy year-round season of drama, comedy, dance and poetry across multiple stages in Newtown's cultural precinct, alongside its acclaimed drama and photography schools.
Opening onto Mary Fitzgerald Square, it is a natural stop on the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk route.
