Reefsteamers Steam Train Trips
Reefsteamers is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation that preserves and operates vintage South African steam locomotives , offering one of the most nostalgic travel experiences in Gauteng aboard fully operational heritage trains. The organisation maintains a fleet of lovingly restored steam engines from South Africa's golden railway era, including the iconic Class 19D and Class 24 locomotives.
Excursion trips depart from various stations in the East Rand on scheduled dates throughout the year, with each journey covering scenic sections of historical track through Gauteng's industrial and suburban landscape. A Reefsteamers trip is a full sensory experience: the smell of coal smoke, the rhythmic chuffing of the pistons, the whistle echoing across the countryside, and the mechanical drama of a working steam locomotive under a full head of pressure.
Passengers travel in restored vintage coaches with period fittings, and knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to explain the history of each locomotive and route. Trips are ticketed events that run on specific dates , check the Reefsteamers website or social media for upcoming excursions.
The organisation also participates in national heritage days, exhibition events, and occasionally runs private charter trips. Proceeds fund ongoing locomotive restoration and preservation.
